What You Should Know About Basement Mold
When dealing with water in your basement, it’s always helpful to remember you’re doing this to prevent much bigger problems down the road. For example, if you consistently experience flooding in a part of your basement, you risk having structural issues in the home in and around that spot. Additionally, moisture buildup can destroy your belongings, and since many people use their basements specifically for storage of their valuables, this is a frustrating reality.
But one thing that often gets overlooked is mold. If you see mold growing in your basement, it’s not simply enough to wipe the area with some cleaning products and call it a day. Mold is unsightly, smelly, and damaging to your home’s structural integrity. Preventing mold is an imperative part of maintaining your home since it can actually lead to some serious health issues.
Some people do not experience sensitivity to molds, but even if this is the case, it does not mean that it should not be avoided. After all, minimal exposure may lead to nothing, but prolonged exposure could create a bigger health issue later.
For people who are sensitive to mold, they may experience:
- Congestion or nasal stuffiness
- Throat irritation
- Coughing or wheezing
- Eye irritation
- Skin Irritation
- Headaches
There are also people who have mold allergies and are thus even more sensitive to mold, making the above symptoms even more severe. Additionally, people with a compromised immunity, such as the elderly or young children, or people with chronic lung illnesses, may be susceptible to serious infection in their lungs when exposed to mold.
The most common and severe form of issues arise as respiratory problems. Mold can make asthma attacks worse or even negatively impact the lungs of an otherwise healthy person. Even if you or your family don’t spend too much time in your basement, mold means that mold spores are in the air, causing further damage. Since mold thrives in damp and moist environments, the best thing you can do to prevent mold is make sure it never even has a chance to grow there.
